Even though the majority of the Earth is covered in water, only about 3% of that is fresh water; and a large portion of that is frozen. Even though fresh water is renewable, the amount seems to be decreasing. I believe that this correlates with population growth. As the number of people grows, so does the demand for water.

Water rights fuel many conflicts and controversy throughout history. The US uses large amounts of water every day. People use water for drinking, watering lawns/gardens/flowers, kids play in it, generating power, irrigation, agriculture, and many other uses. Fortunately, the US government has acknowledged the problem of water conservation and has begun to regulate for the past years. With advances in technology, the US government now requires State and Federal laws that control water pollution and amounts used.

I found an interesting US Geological survey done in 2005 that breaks down the water usage in the US. The information was found at the following website: http://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/2004/circ1268/htdocs/text-total.html

How America Uses Water:

Electric Power – 48%

Irrigation – 34%

Public Supply – 11%

Industrial – 5%

Livestock – <1%

Mining – <1%

Aquaculture – <1%

There are many advantages of outsourcing to China, or outsourcing in general; but do they out weight the disadvantages?

1.	When a business outsources to a foreign country, a manager’s ability of control is significantly decreased. I would assume that most (if not all) businesses would have a contract, but the control is still not there. A foreign country will most likely not have the same values and goals as your business or the US for that matter. The country is going to driven to make a profit for them, probably with not much thought of how it will affect the US. Plus there is a major distance factor, so one is not able to oversee the goings on nearly as effectively.

2.	This may not seem like a disadvantage that people often consider; security and legal issues. There is a plethora of differences between US law, China law, and every other country; and the US does not have the ability to step into that sovereign nation.

3.	To me, the most annoying part is quality. I would say that the majority of my China made products are crap. This goes back to what the other country is driven by, making money.

4.	I can’t seem to wrap my head around why our government cannot figure out the US labor market problems. It’s because we keep outsourcing! The more jobs we outsource, the more people without jobs here in the

5.	Publicity. Outsourcing in general carries a negative connotation; especially if one is from a community where jobs were outsourced.

Before a company outsources, they should weigh all the factors carefully. A decision may seem like a good one at the time; but if one’s pockets are not deep enough to support the negatives of outsourcing, it may become a decision that a business will later regret.

I assume when the boatload of Easter Islanders landed on Easter Island, they had no idea that they would probably starve to death in later generations there. Once they had arrived there, they basically had to settle there because the next closest land is over 1200 miles away. With no navigational tools, one “oops” is a big deal. The Islanders’ culture decided to erect moai, not just a handful, but hundreds of them. They placed their moais on the coast, but built them more inland. Since these statues were so massive, they needed to be transported. To do so Islanders cut down many trees for transportation. Eventually all of the trees where used and none where left. Oops; because as many know, without trees many things can go wrong. First the soil is able to erode away. Then since the soil has eroded, crops will fail. Eventually Islanders will go hungry. No one knows for sure as to why Easter Islanders allowed their ecosystem to crumble they way it did, but I speculate that it was over glory. As Islanders built moais, the next leader wanted a bigger and better moai with disregard for the land and people. After it was too late to correct, the land was destroyed with no reversal and eventually the people would begin to fight amongst themselves just for food to survive. People and countries should look and analyze Easter Island and learn from it. If Islanders had not been so self-centered, the island could be doing well today.

Does anyone else have terrible luck with roommates; or am I the only one? I whole-heartedly believe that roommates are an awful curse and can prepare you for anything in life. My roommate (Steph) is the sweetest girl, but a complete slob and I’ll admit slightly annoying. Steph and I have separate bedrooms, but share a kitchen/dining room area, a bathroom, and a living room. At the beginning of the year we had laid out guidelines. One’s general, not too difficult, guidelines; such as, pick up after yourself, wash your dishes, take out the trash if it’s full, etc. After every meal I wash my dishes. After I shower I pick up my dirty clothes and towels. But Steph is a prime example of Tragedy of the Commons; since my dishes aren’t sitting in the sink, she’ll leave hers there. Her jackets, clothes, foods, and whatever else one can imagine are all over our living room. Steph has abused our understanding of the common areas for her own personal use. I’m not quite sure when the last time she washed her dishes or took out the trash. If one is a messy person, that’s fine; but when there is shared living space it should be treated with respect because other people live there too. I’ve asked her nicely to pick up after herself, with no results. There are not consequences for her actions so I assume she will continue in her ways since I am too much of a chicken actually take serious action. I have learned, very well, first hand that tragedy of the commons will result with roommates and no repercussions.

Moral of the story: I should either do something about it…or suck it up.

When a child becomes of age to enter school, a teacher becomes a large portion of his or her life. The question often arises as to who hold more responsibility in a child’s life: the teacher, or the parent(s). I believe that there is a delicate balance between the two. The teacher is largely accountable for a child’s learning, because otherwise why would we need schools. I have had many teacher fall short of teaching the subject matter that they were hired to do. I agree that teachers need to be paid more. The individual who are most qualified to become teachers and not becoming teachers because of the pay issue. So schools are settling and hiring individuals who (not always) are not as well qualified and should go back to school themselves. But let’s say that we have a teacher that is dually qualified and is doing his or her job to the best of their ability. They can only teach a child as much as a parent allows. Many parents do not encourage or reinforce what are they are being taught at school. There are parents that see school as a babysitter for 8 hours and when they pick their child up from school they do not allow for time for homework, or to help and encourage their child to do well. And then you have the parents who do not care how or what their child is doing. A teacher is a very influence individual person in a child’s life; but their responsibilities can only go so far.

In class on Wednesday, someone brought up how they did not think that it was “fair” that the government used our parents’ income to measure where students stood on the FASFA. Ok, well if the government did not use our parents’ income, what would they use? I know when I graduated from HS, I probably had a net worth of about $1. Anyways, the point is that the government would end up paying for everyone’s college education otherwise. I personally know students who don’t have their parents claim them so they do get more funding, but their parents still feed them the money to pay for college! I’m pretty sure that there would be a lot of this going on, and basically some parents would be getting a discount. Luckily I have parents that love me so much and want to teach me bogus life lessons, and allow me to pay for more on tuition AND still claim me. Aren’t parents wonderful sometimes? Until someone is able to come up with a better, efficient, and logical way to measure the FASFA by I think we should stick to the way it is.

In class yesterday, there were a few ideas discussed as to how government could “fix poverty.” Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but poverty is never going to go away. For starters, that is just how life is; everyone is not equal and never will be. Don’t get me wrong here. In the US we all have equal opportunities, but everyone can’t be a millionaire. For starters, no matter how much funding the government gives someone to get them back on their feet, that doesn’t been they’ll be willing to work. Legislature can’t fix the free-rider phenomenon; they can give out desire and ambition.

To help reduce money being distributed poorly, the government should monitor the money given out more closely. After working at Hy-Vee for a year, I get to see many people go through that don’t spend government funded money on what the government had in mind. Personally I think that government should directly pay for the items requested and that the government feels fit.

Side Notes that aren’t directly related, but I thought of while typing and had the desire to get them off my chest:

I get tired of hearing of the idea have better education for everyone. Now let’s think about think, everyone gets a college education, who is going to do the jobs that don’t require college educations? Another thing is the damn Child Left Behind program. I had a small high school (graduating class of 16) and with this program in place, if someone was struggling the teacher basically had to “dumb” the rest of the material down for individuals who couldn’t keep up with. Dumb.

South Dakota’s highest poverty rates mainly include areas on Reservations. People have many theories as to why and ideas to fix the problem, but I’ve had some time to mull over points-of-views that were discussed in class earlier. Now this is difficult for me to discussing this topic with “opened-mind” because I have firsthand experience with India Reservations. My credentials (if that’s what you want to call them) come from junior high/high school and some college. Every summer in junior high and high school I would spend about a month of it on the Pine Ridge Reservation working on a ranch, and now into college I still go out there a few times in the summer and every fall for deer season.

Anyways, I am bias on this topic and believe that there are some Indians who squander their (government’s) money, do not work hard, do illegal activity, etc. Of course there are these “people” are in every race, but I feel that that majority of Indians who still live on the Reservation are more apt to do this. Personally, I feel that most of the Indians who will not do this, get off the Reservation and make something of themselves. Just because you leave the Reservation and go out into the world, does not mean you are giving up on your culture.
There is not nice way to say this, but the government royally screwed the Indians when signing treaties because they condensed them into a small, god-forsaken area that no one really wanted in the first place. Their location leads to lack of job opportunities and poorer education, which just continues in the cycle.

I realize that I have many thoughts started here and am not sure if all the details are there, but give me any comments and let me know.

I been sitting here for the last 10 minutes contemplating this question and the only thing that I can come up with is that both ends of the spectrum are too extreme for my taste. I see both sides and right now I should completely tear down technology. Before beginning my blog I just finished a quiz for Finance on “homework manager;” my only thoughts on this is, ‘what a lot of humbug!’ (I’m taking a course from Dean Keller of the B-School and I’m pretty sure it’s his second favorite saying. Second after bullshit, but I assume he doesn’t say this for politically correct purposes) Anyways, I just received a 60% because I didn’t round my decimal places the same as the computer did so that’s too bad for me. I never had the glorious opportunity to use some MathCel (?) program I’ve heard so many great things about; but I’m sure it would probably go as well as Homework Manager. These programs are basically a lazy way out for teachers. Sure it’s handy dandy but if you don’t have time to grade it…don’t assign it and expect students to do it. I also like to get that piece of paper back that has the corrections on it, letting me know what I did wrong.

On the other hand, I do like technology in the class room. For example clickers (when they work) are wonderful. They are able to take attendance (which I think is awesome because I’m that nerdy girl who never misses a class and is annoyed when other people do and get away with it) and attendance doesn’t take 15 minutes out of the class period. Also, they are easier for professors to poll students because for some reason nobody likes to raise their hand, but are willing to push a button.

Technology does confine us to our homes more, but there are some people who otherwise would not have any contact with people. All in all, I feel that technology is useful, but shouldn’t consumer one’s life.

There are some people in the world that attend college because they’re not quite sure what the next step in life is. I feel the reason I chose to go to college was to achieve a goal in my life. I have a plan, I aim to stick to the plan, and don’t intend to be here longer then need be. With that being said, I also do not think that classes that USD deems as ‘requirements’ are a waste of time. For those out there that continuously complains about: having to take extra classes, not “benefiting” them or his or her major, etc; I want you to ask yourself: Why in the hell did you decide to attend a four year university?? I find the fact annoying and tiresome when individuals complain about “worthless” classes. Attend a tech school, community college, 2-year degree. The education you gain here is exceptionally valuable, priceless for lack of a better word. These classes help form your opinions, gain a broader knowledge and respect for people, and plain broaden your horizons from Small Ville, SD. Whether you realize it or not, it becomes part of whom you are.
I find my education valuable and time well spent. I do also agree that the education pool is being slightly watered down for the fact that many more students enter college; but I don’t think that many more students are graduating. A junior class is not the same as it was when it entered as a freshman class. With a few more individuals graduating, that makes the job market that more fierce; which in turn makes your education and time spent at USD that more valuable.
